Lexicon of Rabbis in the Kingdom of Poland

Project description

The aim of this is to create a lexicon of all the rabbis active in the Kingdom of Poland, 1815–1918, as well as in the lands of the former Kingdom in the years 1918–1944. The lexicon will include personal entries of varying scope and detail of information. The purpose of the entries will be to provide verified information concerning all the rabbis of the Kingdom of Poland, and where we do not have such information – to point out these lacuna. The entries will also be supplemented with iconographic and textual materials, ultimately providing a publicly accessible repository of diverse primary sources concerning the rabbis.
The final result of the project will be an online platform providing access to about 500 textual biographies of rabbis and about 2,500-3,500 personal questionnaires in basic form. The biographies will be written not only by members of the team, but also by the most prominent researchers of the history of Polish Jews and by selected young scholars.
